We've come a long way since Neuromancer, and we're more than half way to 2020 since R.Talsorian
Games released the Cyberpunk (2013) RPG in 1988. It's been a bumpy ride, particulalry in the late 1990's
when RTG went on hiatus. In December of 2005 after more than 7 unofficial years in development (in reality
it appears to be less than two), Cyberpunk V.3 was released.
Was it the right time, and is the future still dark? That's a good question. To date I haven't seen
the outright enthusiasm, rabid or not, that has been generated over the years with the release of new
material from RTG. Perhaps that is also symptomatic of RTG's apparent unwillingness to completely revamp
their web presence, with a focus on their new product. The irony is such that throughout V.3 there are many
links and references on pages to URL's that presently on the web site, go nowhere. To some degree I am hoping
that what is provided here will reverse that trend.
For me the jury is still out with regard to V.3. There are a lot of things about it I really don't like, but
then there are some things I think are a master stroke, as long as they are expanded on at some point of course.
It's difficult for me to be too highly critical of certain elements, especially when I am presently involved in
writing new material for the game, through Firestorm Ink - you can check out the progess of this project on
this site by visiting the
Firestorm: Aftershock thread.
V.3 left us with a big hole, from the end of the 4th Corporate War to 203X when V.3 is set. The aim of the
Firestorm Ink project is to fill in that gap by providing a detailed path from 2020 to 203X including the
establishment and evolution of the Altcults. That part of the Cyberpunk future is definitely dark, as civilization
shifted from corporate control, to a post-apocalyptic feudal system - a fractured society where survival is life's
only reward.
So, between the V.3 work I am doing, the Australian Source Book for CyberGeneration, called
Digital Dreamtime,
and my foray into D20 with the Elizabethan setting of
Black Powder & Steel, I hope to be busy for some time. In addition to this, and as a side project
to the Cyberpunk world of RTG, I will be unloading all of my Cyberpunk CCG material here. When the game was
released, this site was the main fan repository of articles and information, and when the game died, for a while
it became thew "unofficial" Cyberpunk CCG home. Maybe one day we'll see either this or another V.3 based CCG
appear on the market.
